Politics is being used not to serve the people but to crush them, says the newly elected President of the Congress party Rahul Gandhi. He was speaking after taking charge as the President of the party from his Mother Sonia Gandhi at a simple ceremony held in the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters here in New Delhi today.
The oath-taking ceremony took off as scheduled declared earlier after his election to the highest office in the party. The event took off with Motilal Vora handing over a certificate of election as President to Rahul Gandhi followed by speeches by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and the former President Sonia Gandhi.
Addressing the mammoth gathering at the venue, Rahul Gandhi accorded the highest priority to the party cadre at the downtrodden. He called upon crores of party cadre that he would carry forward the legacy while making the party as the Grand Old Young Party and assured he would not budge an inch in protecting, safeguarding and honouring their beliefs and aspirations.
Reacting to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s vow to make India a Mukht Bharat, Rahul said we the Congress party will not fight hate with hate but with love and affection. "I want to build India wherein BJP should also be there', he remarked.
Earlier, Sonia listed out how she faced hurdles in executing her responsibility in taking forward the legacy of her husband's family since the death of her husband. She was all praise for the Gandhi family who she said had sacrificed their health, wealth, family and finally their lives for the sake of this country. 'Indira always treated me like her daughter. I learnt a lot from her and my husband about India and its' issues. It became my responsibility as the wife of Rajiv Gandhi to take forward his legacy and the result is before you", she concluded.
